2019 will kick off in style for Grantham as they host East Midlands rivals Basford at the Meres on New Year's Day.

The last game of the calendar year was one to remember for Grantham as they secured a last minute winner thanks to an own goal away at Lincolnshire rivals Gainsborough Trinity.

Danny Durkin and Ryley Thompson had clawed the game back to 2-2 after the Gingerbreads fell behind twice in the game - however with just minutes on the clock left Trinity defender Joe Maguire headed the ball into his own net to to give Town a 3-2 win away from home.

The result allowed Town to move back up two places into 14th position, keeping the gap between Grantham and the bottom three to nine points.

Nottinghamshire outfit Basford - who have former Gingerbreads amongst their ranks in the names of Stefan Galinski, Kieran Preston, Deon Miekle and Ellis Storey have enjoyed their first season in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League.

The Yellows are sixth in the league - only five points off the play-off spots.

Likewise to the Gingerbreads, Basford were also involved in a 3-2 thriller on Saturday, however they were on the losing end as they lost at home to Warrington Town.

Both sides have already met each other this season in August where Basford ran out as 3-1 winners.

Grantham boss Richard Thomas was impressed with his side's end to the year and says that he wants his side to continue the performance into the new year: "Boxing Day was the perfect way to end the year and showed our determination to fight for one another.

"I want 2019 to be a year to remember and there is no better way to start it off by getting three points against local rivals.

"The boys have worked really hard and I know they will continue to do so as we want to try and finish as high as we possibly can in the table."

As far as Thomas is concerned, there are no new injury concerns to worry about.
