MATCH PREVIEW - Gingerbreads Look to build on Trophy win

Callum Boyle2 Nov 2020 - 17:07

Grantham are back in Pitching In Northern Premier League action on Tuesday night at home to Stalybridge Celtic.

The Gingerbreads will be full of confidence after beating Yaxley 2-0 in the FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round on Saturday

A first-half penalty from Liam Hardy and a goal after the break from Hardy’s second-half replacement Remaye Campbell was enough to put Grantham into the next round of the competition, but focus will now turn to Tuesday’s fixture at The Meres which could see Martin McIntosh’s men move as high as 17th.

THE OPPOSITION

Under the guidance of manager Simon Haworth this season,Stalybridge Celtic are two places above Grantham in the table in 19th place and have one win to their name in the league so far – a 3-1 win at home to Morpeth Town.

Like the Gingerbreads, Stalybridge were also in FA Trophy action at the weekend and were involved in a five-goal thriller, however they were on the losing side as they were beaten 3-2 by lower league Marine.

KEY PLAYER

18-year-old striker Lewis Salmon has made a strong start to life for Stalybridge since arriving on loan from Altrincham until January.

Since making the move from the Vanarama National League club, Salmon has scored three times this season as well as providing two assists.

Known as a goalscorer from his time at Trafford FC, where he found the net 13 times in 35 appearances, Salmon is likely to pose as the main threat alongside strike partner Jonathan Ustabasi who also has three goals and a total of seven assists to his name.

MANAGER’S THOUGHTS

Gingerbreads boss Martin McIntosh was delighted with his team’s performance against Yaxley but has challenged his squad to build upon their win with another positive result.

He said: “It was a really good performance and really nice to get that first win (in normal time) of the season under our belts.

“Sometimes it hasn’t gone our way and sometimes we’ve not been at our best but a win like that will give us confidence going into this game.

“We’re coming up against a side that are in and around us in the table and the aim now is for us to build upon the win at the weekend and get a run of form of form going.”

TEAM NEWS

Greg Young could return from a shoulder injury to feature whilst captain Brad Abbott may also return after missing out on Saturday’s win, but the rest of the squad should be fit for selection.
