Winning in Workington

Simon Hayes18 Nov 2018 - 16:36

The Gingerbreads recorded their first win since September with a comprehensive win at Workington.

A solid rearguard in the first half hour gave Grantham the platform to take their chances and come back with all three points.

"First half it didn't feel as though it would be as convincing." Said Gingerbreads Manager Richard Thomas. "We put bodies on the line and worked hard all round the pitch. We got the reward for our hard work over the last few weeks."

Workington started strongly, pushing Grantham back and forcing six corners in the first fifteen minutes. Despite the pressure, the Gingerbreads held firm and Jordan Wright wasn't stretched in the Grantham goal.

It was almost all Workington for the first half hour with Grantham restricted to the occasional foray into the home territory. Conor Tinnion got a shot away after 21 minutes, but Wright turned his shot away. A minute later Tom Siddons turned past one challenge, but shot narrowly wide.

Danny Durkin got on the end of a long ball after half an hour, but Workington goalkeeper Aaran Taylor did enough to block the Gingerbreads striker. Two minutes later Durkin turned provider. His low cross found Max Watters 8 yards out. Watters hit a firm shot past Taylor to put Grantham in front.

Wright preserved the Gingerbreads lead ten minutes before the break when Tinnion curled a free kick past the Grantham wall. Wright got down well to turn his shot past the post.

Two goals in two minutes inside the first ten minutes of the second half put the Gingerbreads firmly in the driving seat. On 51 minutes Durkin chased a long ball into the Workington penalty area. He beat Gari Rowntree and struck a low shot inside Taylor's near post.

Two minutes later Durkin put Grantham three goals in front. Another quick break from the Gingerbreads saw Durkin get clear of the home defence and take the ball round Taylor. Durkin still had to slip his shot past two covering defenders which he did calmly to take the wind out of the home side.

Grantham added a fourth goal after 63 minutes. This time it was Durkin who turned provider. He flicked the ball on for Watters. Watters took the ball past Taylor and slotted the ball into the empty net.

What would have been a perfect afternoon was spoilt with 18 minutes left. Jason Walker went down inside the Grantham penalty area under a challenge from Pierce Bird. The Gingerbreads defender got a yellow card and Walker stroked the penalty home.

That was all that Workington had to offer. Grantham comfortably saw out the rest of the game to take home the points.
