Winning in Workington

Simon Hayes15 Apr 2018 - 21:30

The Gingerbreads returned to winning ways with a classic away performance.

Solid defending built a platform for late goals in each half to push Grantham back into third place in the race for the play-offs.

Playing into the breeze, Grantham were put under pressure by the home side, but in a frantic opening, gave as good as they got. The two sides exchanged corners, but created few openings in the first fifteen minutes.

Workington began to create half chances, but Max Brown, Scott Allison and Steve Rigg failed to hit the target. The Gingerbreads loan goalkeeper Rdolfs Soloha kept scores level after 27 minutes. Workington got the ball through to Brown with only Soloha to beat, but the Gingerbreads keeper saved well with his legs.

As the half wore on, Grantham showed more of their attacking side. Lee Shaw and Danny Meadows combined well, but nothing came in the end. On 35 minutes, the Gingerbreads took the lead on the break. Workington failed to make the most of an advantage played by referee Mr Kitchen. Grantham moved the ball forward quickly on the left and Shaw 's cross was turned home by Sam Osborne.

Just before half-time Grantham rode their luck as Workington pressed for an equaliser. Rob Wilson gathered a loose ball outside the Grantham penalty area and fired in a shot. His effort rattled the crossbar with Soloha beaten.

The home side went close again on 54 minutes. Workington won a free kick 25 yards out. Dave Symington drove his free kick just over the crossbar.

Grantham hit a purple patch just after the hour mark. Workington goalkeeper Sarah Taylor got away with a mix-up in defence, before Osborne got in behind the home defence. He turned well, but rolled his shot just past the post.

Workington began to press for an equaliser, but came up against a solid back line. Stefan Galinski led the line superbly winning header after header. When Brown got in again with 13 minutes to go, he fired wide.

As the game went into added time, Grantham sealed the win. Another headed clearance from Galinski beat the home defence. Shaw ran through and touched the ball past Taylor before blasting home from close range.
