It was Grantham that made the early running and they were rewarded on six minutes when Jordan Hempenstall was fouled in the box by Steven Snaith. Hempenstall took the penalty kick himself and Shane Bland in the Whitby goal made a comfortable save diving to his right. This was the signal for Whitby to take control of the game for the remainder of the half. A long range shot by Snaith was easily saved by Preston and then a free header from Matthew Tymon brought out a great save from Preston.

The second period saw Preston, in the Grantham goal, lose the ball when trying to dummy the Whitby forward but the visitors could not capitalise on the gift. It was Grantham’s turn to control play and Hempenstall was denied a shot on goal by a last gap tackle. From a corner Galinski powered a header just over the bar. Grantham introduced Luke Shaw and he would break the deadlock for Grantham. On 70 minutes, a Lee Shaw cross found Luke Shaw and he was able control the ball before firing home. Grantham ensured three points on 86 minutes when Danny Meadows shot found its way past Bland.
