The Gingerbreads Unbeaten Run is Mickle Over

The Gingerbreads Unbeaten Run is Mickle Over

Simon Hayes20 Feb 2017 - 13:31

After 17 matches and a new season record The Gingerbreads lost 2-1 at Mickleover today.

Felipe Barcelos returned to the starting lineup after missing Tuesday night's draw against Matlock.

Mickleovers former Derby County player Pablo Mills opened the scoring with a cross that caught the wind and flew over Kieran Preston.

The Gingerbreads pushed forward but couldn't make any clear cut chances. Harry Clifton saw a couple of long range efforts go wide, Felipe Barcelos saw a penalty appeal waved away.

Then came a killer blow just before halftime. Mickleover got the ball forward into the box, Stefan Galinski made a great tackle but the ball ended up at Clifton Morrison's feet and slotted home.

The Gingerbreads needed a big second half to come back and they almost turned it round.

In the first 5 minutes chances fell to Lee Shaw, Luke Shaw and Harry Clifton. The Gingerbreads pushed forward looking to get back into it.

With quarter of an hour gone they managed it, Curtis Burrows slid a cross in and all Lee Shaw had to do was stroke it home.

The Gingerbreads carried on pushing forward but at every opportunity Mickleover slowed the game down by taking their time over each goal kick.

Lee Shaw found the net again but was ruled out for offside. More chances fell but the equaliser wasn't coming.

Mickleover were reduced to 10 men when their player manager John McGrath received his second booking in almost as many minutes.

With Mickleover putting up shop, The Gingerbreads found it hard to unpick them. Stefan Galinski was pushed forward and saw a shot in the box push wide.

The last chance for The Gingerbreads fell to Danny Meadows, his cross looked as if it was going to balloon high and wide but at the last minute dipped but hit the cross bar.

Not long after the final whistle went, signalling the end to what is now a club record unbeaten run in a season. The club record unbeaten run is 20 which started at the end of the 63/64 and jato the 64/65 season.

The Gingerbreads drop out of the playoff places on goal difference.

We return to action next Saturday at home to Workington, where the play off push continues.
