Grantham slipped to a second home defeat in 72 hours going down 3-0 to Buxton. Grantham welcomed back Greg smith following his 1 match suspension and new signing Sam Purcicoe started with Lawrence Gorman dropping to the bench and Rhys Lewis unavailable due to the imminent arrival of his first child.
Grantham made a bright opening taking the game to Buxton. An early header by Ben Saunders went just over and Lee Shaw touched a through ball past the keeper but the ball was hacked clear by a Buxton defender. Buxton threatened after 13 minutes when deep cross from Buckley beat everyone and went out at the far post. Greg smith went close on 15 minutes when his shot following a McGhee pass went narrowly wide and the same player just failed to get onto a Purcicoe cross 3 minutes later. Grantham went close to taking the lead on 21 minutes when Lee Beeson saw his 30myard free kick hit the woodwork with Buxton’s keeper Barnes beaten. Disaster struck for the Gingerbreads on 27 minutes when Beeson was dispossessed and Buxton leading scorer Liam Hardy was left with a clear run on goal and he fired past Jake Turner to give Buxton the lead much against the run of play. Buxton had the upper hand for the rest of the half with Niall Doran going close twice. Grantham forced a save from Buxton keeper Barnes following a corner in the final minute of the half which ended with Buxton one up.
Grantham introduces Jack Becket for the injured Jamie McGhee at half time and Buxton replaced goal scorer Liam Hardy with Bradley Barraclough. Becket was quickly into the game seeing his shot from outside the box blocked after just 4 minutes of the half but it was Buxton who then began to take the game to Grantham and they increased their lead on 56 minutes when central defender Joel Bembo – Leta netted at the far post after Grantham’s defence had failed to clear a Buxton corner. Former gingerbread Ash Burbeary turned in the box on 64 minutes but saw his shot go narrowly wide before Micky Emmott whipped in a cross for Grantham but Greg Smith had strayed narrowly onside. Buxton striker Alistair Taylor made contact with Grantham keeper Jake Turner after the keeper had collected the ball and after consulting his assistant Taylor was yellow carded by referee Mr Guest. Shortly afterwards Taylor was withdrawn and replaced by Alex Wiles. Grantham came close to reducing the arrears on 65 minutes when Emmott headed a deep Danny Meadows cross back across goal and Brad McGowan saw his shot come back off the woodwork. The game had become scrappy but Buxton were able to increase their lead further on 79 minutes when substitute Wiles was given room to run through the Grantham defence to beat turner at his near post to seal the win for Buxton. Grantham introduced Aiden Kirby for Lee Beeson and Stefan Bilyk for Greg smith late in the game but could make no impression on the Buxton defence and the game ended with the score line at 3-0.
