The wait is over as Grantham begin their 2019/20 BetVictor Northern Premier League campaign against FC United of Manchester on Saturday.

Having joined in the second half of last season, Paul Rawden and Russ Cousins will be looking to improve on an 18th placed finish last season, as they begin their first full season in charge.

Pre-season has been positive for the Gingerbreads, with the side winning seven out of ten games in the run-up to the start of the season, which kicks-off at The Meres on Saturday.

Away side FC United of Manchester are expected to bring a large travelling support as they prepare for life in the Northern Premier League after being relegated from the Vanarama National League North last season.

Current manager Neil Reynolds was appointed as Reds manager in October 2018 and similarly to Rawden and Cousins, begins his first full season at the helm.

The current dangermen for the away side are midfielder, and captain, Michael Potts as well as striker Nialle Rodney, formerly of Hartlepool United and also began his career locally at Nottingham Forest.

The Gingerbreads will also be buoyed by a new-look playing squad, with notable additions including players with Football League experience such as Craig Westcarr, Rob Atkinson and James Baxendale, some returning faces from last season's squad in Jake Green, Tom Ward and Fernando Toxtle-Bell and academy graduate Rodrigo Silva, who has been promoted to the first team squad after impressing over the summer.

Grantham boss Rawden is looking forward to the start of the new season against what he believes will be a tough test.

“To host FC United on the opening day is great.

“It’s going to be a real test against a side who return to this league after their relegation from the National League North. It'll test where we're at as a squad, nice and early in the season too!"

“Hopefully we will get a good attendance for the game and make a positive start this weekend.”

Rawden said the players are raring to go but one player who will be more than excited is summer signing Danny Racchi, who had a spell at the Reds.

“Obviously Danny Racchi is a former player for them which adds extra fuel to the fire, as if often the case when you get to face a former side, but the rest of the boys are all raring to go.”

Rawden and Cousins have a full squad available to select from for this weekend, with no injury concerns to report.
