Grantham could go as high second in the table this weekend with a win and if results go their way as they welcome Whitby Town to the Meres.

A goal from Gregg Smith on Bank Holiday Monday was enough to take the bragging rights in an all East Midlands affair as Grantham beat Basford 1-0.

The win meant the Gingerbreads have taken seven points from three games – the best start a Grantham side has made to a season since the memorable 2011/12 promotion season.

Opponents Whitby have also made a promising start to the season, sitting one place below Grantham in seventh and also on seven points despite playing one more game than Paul Rawden’s side.

The Yorkshire side also tasted victory over the Bank Holiday with a 2-1 win over Morpeth Town to maintain their unbeaten start at home.

Whilst the Seasiders maybe lower in the table, they still possess a threat in the shape of striker Bradley Fewster.

A former Middlesbrough academy graduate, the 23-year-old has found the net three times this season – including the winner on Monday where his penalty was enough to take the three points and is currently the league’s top goal-scorer.

Grantham fans will also remember last season’s encounter at the Meres where the East Midlander’s came from two goals down to win 3-2 with Tom Siddons scoring a last-gasp winner to send the crowd into jubilation.

Manager Paul Rawden is hoping that his side can continue the positive start to the season and secure another three points.

“It was really good to get another win on Monday and pick up on where we left last time out in the FA Cup.

“The lads are really hungry to win as many games as possible as well as playing attractive football which will make the fans proud of them.

“Saturday will pose lots of obstacles. They are a good side with goals in them and very physical so will make it difficult for us, but we can go toe to toe with them for sure.

“We have good quality and great depth in our squad, and I know that with the right mentality, we can get the win and continue our good start to the season.”

Defender AJ Adeleken is expected to return to the side after missing the game against Basford due to work commitments.

Fernando Bell-Toxtle has left The Gingerbreads and has joined Ilkeston.

Rawden and fellow joint manager Russ Cousins are expected to have a full squad to choose from this weekend.
