Grantham Town progressed to the next round of the FA Youth Cup after a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Blackstones at The Meres, with second-half goals from Brian and Umer finally breaking the visitors’ resistance.

FIRST HALF

The game began evenly, but Grantham quickly showed their attacking intent. Two strong early runs resulted in a corner and presented Umer with the first opportunity of the evening, only for the Blackstones defence to stand firm and deny him.

Umer was involved again shortly afterwards, delivering an excellent cross which was met by Olly, whose header was on target but comfortably dealt with by the visiting goalkeeper.

Grantham continued to push forward and Umer was denied once more, this time by an excellent save from the Blackstones keeper. Some fantastic passing football then created another corner and another opportunity for the Gingerbreads, but the hosts were unable to find the finishing touch.

Blackstones soon demonstrated their own threat on the break. A quick move from a goal kick allowed them to break through the Grantham defence, but the resulting effort sailed narrowly over Harri's crossbar.

Grantham responded immediately, producing another excellent passage of play which ended with Brian delivering a dangerous cross into the area. It narrowly evaded his teammates and went wide.

The visitors continued to threaten with direct attacking play, another long ball creating a shooting opportunity which again cleared the crossbar.

For much of the opening half-hour there was little to separate the two sides. Blackstones began to gain the upper hand during the final 10 to 15 minutes of the half, although Grantham continued to look dangerous whenever they were able to break forward.

One promising Grantham attack was halted by the referee's whistle, with Blackstones awarded a free kick, before another end-to-end passage resulted in a Grantham effort going wide.

Late in the half, Blackstones capitalised on an offside decision against Grantham and worked their way forward to win a corner. The visitors threatened to break the deadlock, but Harri produced an important save to ensure the sides went into the interval level.

HALF-TIME: GRANTHAM TOWN 0–0 BLACKSTONES

SECOND HALF

The second half immediately brought more intensity.

Within the opening minutes, Nik was fouled by the Blackstones number six, who received a yellow card. The resulting free kick was within shooting range for Grantham, but the effort went narrowly wide.

The Gingerbreads maintained the pressure from the restart and finally got the breakthrough their attacking play deserved.

Some excellent teamwork opened up the Blackstones defence before the ball eventually fell to Brian, who made no mistake with the finish to put Grantham 1–0 ahead.

GOAL — GRANTHAM TOWN 1–0 BLACKSTONES (BRIAN)

The goal sparked a response from Blackstones, who increased the tempo and began throwing more bodies forward. Grantham were forced to work for every bit of possession and territory.

Umer almost doubled the advantage just minutes after the opener, but once again found the Blackstones goalkeeper in his way.

A Grantham foul then handed the visitors a free kick and resulted in a yellow card for the hosts. Blackstones attempted to make the opportunity count, but their effort went over the bar.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and came agonisingly close to equalising. After winning possession from a Grantham goal kick, Blackstones worked an opening and fired an effort towards goal which struck the post and deflected wide.

Grantham weathered the pressure and began threatening again themselves. A strong challenge on Brian resulted in another free kick, although the resulting effort lacked the power required to trouble the goalkeeper.

One of Grantham's best moves of the evening followed. Orlando produced a superb run up the pitch before delivering a cross towards Umer, whose header went narrowly wide. It was excellent attacking football and deserved more reward.

Grantham made their first change with Stephen replacing Ollie, before Blackstones won a dangerous free kick just outside the penalty area.

Orlando defended brilliantly to deny the visitors, although the ball went behind for a corner. Grantham's defence again stood firm as Blackstones continued searching for an equaliser.

Further changes followed as Abdul replaced goalscorer Brian and Spencer came on for Nik.

With just over ten minutes remaining, Blackstones continued their relentless attack and produced two further efforts which both went wide.

Grantham refused to simply sit on their advantage and responded with another excellent attacking move of their own, working the ball all the way towards the Blackstones goal before an effort went narrowly wide.

The action continued from end to end and Blackstones went close once again when an effort deflected off the crossbar.

Liam replaced Orlando as Grantham looked to see out the closing stages.

The Gingerbreads continued to create opportunities, winning two free kicks within shooting range in quick succession, including one following a foul on Umer, but both efforts cleared the crossbar.

With only minutes remaining, Jack replaced Gethan as Blackstones mounted one final push.

The visitors won a free kick in a dangerous position, but Grantham's defence — excellent throughout the evening — blocked the resulting effort.

That defensive moment quickly turned into the move which sealed the tie.

The loose ball was collected by John, who fired it forward towards Umer. The Grantham striker found himself up against two defenders but showed tremendous determination to beat them both.

With the Blackstones goalkeeper having raced outside his area, Umer kept his composure, beat the keeper and found the net to double Grantham's advantage.

It was the perfect way to finish a determined team performance.

FULL-TIME: GRANTHAM TOWN 2–0 BLACKSTONES

Grantham had been made to work throughout by a Blackstones side who provided a stern test, particularly during the closing stages of the first half and for long periods after the break.

But the Gingerbreads showed quality going forward, resilience when Blackstones applied the pressure and, crucially, remained solid defensively to secure a clean sheet and their place in the next round of the FA Youth Cup.

A fantastic 128 supporters were in attendance at The Meres — a brilliant turnout to get behind the young Gingerbreads and support the future of Grantham Town.
