Three words: Rapid. Relentless. Physical.

There are some 0–0 draws that tell you very little about a game. This certainly wasn't one of them.

From the opening whistle to the final kick of the penalty shootout, this was an absolutely relentless FA Youth Cup tie. End-to-end, physical, incredibly fast-paced and played by two sides who simply refused to give an inch.

The opening few minutes set the tone for everything that followed.

Both teams flew out of the blocks, with Grantham immediately showing some excellent passing and switching of play. Carlton responded just as quickly, breaking forward and firing an early effort over the bar in the third minute.

It was already clear what sort of evening we were in for.

Despite the speed and physicality of the contest, Grantham applied themselves superbly. The communication across the pitch was excellent, they continued to find space and, importantly, kept trying to play their football.

The Gingerbreads enjoyed the greater share of possession during the opening half, but Carlton remained a constant threat on the break.

A Grantham free-kick presented one attacking opportunity, but within moments Carlton had turned defence into attack and raced towards the opposite end. They couldn't convert, and from the resulting goal kick the hosts came again, producing another good passage of play without finding the breakthrough.

That became the pattern of the night.

Grantham attack. Carlton respond. Grantham recover. Go again.

Some excellent passing and switching from Grantham created another opening, only for the Carlton defence to shut the door. The hosts immediately broke again, with a perfectly timed challenge from the Grantham defence preventing a shot but conceding a corner.

Harri dealt with the first delivery before Carlton earned another corner, which Grantham successfully cleared.

Still 0–0. Still relentless.

As the half progressed, the physicality increased. Shirts were being pulled, challenges were flying in and free-kicks were becoming more frequent, but the quality of football never disappeared.

Another superb Grantham attack resulted in an effort flashing just wide, while Carlton continued to make sure the Gingerbreads' defence had no opportunity to switch off, sending another effort wide at the other end.

With around 40 minutes played, a Grantham player went down inside the Carlton area following a challenge that brought strong penalty appeals, but nothing was given. Grantham were temporarily reduced to ten while the player received treatment before returning to the pitch.

Frustrations were beginning to show on both sides as another Grantham challenge handed Carlton a free-kick, but the deadlock remained intact.

HALF-TIME: Carlton Town 0–0 Grantham Town

If the first half had been quick, the second somehow found another gear.

Both teams emerged looking like they had something to prove. Every one of the 22 players on the pitch wanted it, and neither side looked prepared to take a backwards step.

Within minutes Grantham had registered two efforts on goal, both denied by the Carlton goalkeeper.

From the resulting goal kick, Grantham were straight back onto the first and second ball and fashioned yet another opportunity, only to find the Carlton keeper in the way again.

There was simply no let-up.

Carlton attempted to build an attack, Grantham intercepted, moved the ball brilliantly through a series of passes and switches and released Umer on another dangerous run. Carlton's defence recovered to deny him.

Moments later, play was back at the other end.

Two Carlton corners in quick succession caused real danger. Harri dealt with the first, before the second resulted in the ball finding the Grantham net during a scramble.

For a moment it looked like the breakthrough had finally arrived.

The assistant referee's flag was up. Offside. No goal. 0–0.

It was a let-off for Grantham, and their response was immediate.

Some exquisite football created another opening for Umer, whose effort went over the bar. Carlton matched Grantham's intensity and quickly worked their way back down the other end, but excellent defending from the Gingerbreads sparked yet another attacking phase.

Umer was involved again. Another opportunity. Still no breakthrough.

A Grantham goal kick was collected and turned into another fantastic run from Umer, only for Carlton's defence to once again get across and make the intervention.

68 minutes played. Still 0–0.

Grantham continued to push.

Another excellent attacking spell produced not one, not two, but three efforts, with Carlton's goalkeeper standing firm to keep the Gingerbreads out.

Carlton regrouped from the goal kick and immediately looked to counter, only for the assistant referee's flag to halt their attack for offside.

Fresh legs were introduced by Grantham, but the tempo refused to drop.

A Grantham corner was cleared by Carlton and suddenly everyone was racing back towards the opposite goal again.

That summed up the night.

One end. Then the other. And back again.

An injury forced another Grantham change, but even that couldn't disrupt their rhythm. The Gingerbreads created another shooting opportunity, although the flag was raised for offside.

Carlton responded from the restart with another powerful run and an effort over the bar.

Fewer than ten minutes remained.

Still 0–0. Still rapid. Still relentless. Still physical.

Both teams threw everything into finding that elusive winning goal. Five additional minutes were signalled, but even after more than 90 minutes played, the intensity and determination never dipped.

The level of performance from the Grantham lads was everything the coaches could have asked for and more.

But there was still no goal.

FULL-TIME: Carlton Town 0–0 Grantham Town

Straight to penalties.

After such an exhausting contest, the tension around the Bill Stokeld Stadium was immense.

Both teams had produced performances worthy of progressing, but only one could take its place in the next round.

Carlton stepped up first.

The opening two penalties from each side were confidently dispatched. Both goalkeepers guessed correctly, but the strikes found their way into the net.

Then came the first opening.

Carlton stepped forward for their third...

HARRI SAVED!

A brilliant stop from the Grantham keeper.

Grantham stepped forward and converted.

Advantage Gingerbreads.

Carlton's fourth penalty suddenly became huge.

The player stepped forward...

MISSED!

Now the equation was simple.

Score Grantham's fourth penalty and the tie was over.

The player stepped forward.

GOAL.

The whistle went and the celebrations erupted.

After more than 90 minutes of relentless football, countless end-to-end attacks, huge defensive moments, outstanding saves and two teams giving absolutely everything, Grantham Town were through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup.

It was one of, if not the, best performances we have seen from this group.

The quality of football was outstanding, but just as impressive was the work rate, communication, discipline and sheer determination shown from the first whistle until the last.

Carlton played their part in a fantastic cup tie and pushed the lads every step of the way, but Grantham stood up to every challenge, kept playing their football and ultimately held their nerve when it mattered most.

As coaches, we couldn't be prouder of them.

Into the next round.
