Abbott joins the club after leaving the Vanarama North side where he made 32 appearances for the Pilgrims as they almost secured promotion to the Vanarama National League – losing to Altrincham in the play-off final.
The 25-year-old has been on trial with the Gingerbreads since the start of the season, and after featuring in the opening two pre-season wins over Rossington Main and Handsworth FC, has chosen to put pen to paper and sign ahead of the upcoming 2020/21 season.
Upon signing for Martin McIntosh’s men, Abbott admitted that he couldn’t wait to get started for his new club.
He said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be here at the club.
“It’s been a long process to get everything done but I really can’t wait to get going and play with the team as well as meet the fans ahead of the new season.
“I had a lot of offers come in from other teams, but I knew this would be the right choice and I can’t wait to get started.”
Abbott started his career at Barnsley where he made five appearances for the club over a three-year spell whilst also spending time on loan at Harrogate Town, Chester and Barrow respectively.
After leaving Barnsley in 2016, Abbott then moved to Buxton where he played under the Gingerbreads boss McIntosh for a brief spell before joining Boston where he spent three years.
With Abbott dropping down a division to play for the Gingerbreads, many would consider the signing a huge coup, but the former Barnsley academy graduate explained why he made the decision.
Abbott said: “For me, the biggest decision was the manager and his coaching staff.
“I know them both from my time when I was with Buxton and they’re very organised and know what they’re doing in terms of the direction they want to take the club.
“After speaking to both the chairman and then also the manager as well as Tim [Ryan], I had a really good feeling about the club and in the end, it was an easy decision.”
As a midfielder, Abbott primarily operates in the middle of the park and he explained exactly what type of player fans will be expecting to see when he pulls on the black and white stripes this season.
Abbott said: “The way I would describe myself is as a box to box midfielder.
“I like to score goals as well as create goals whilst making sure I win all of my one on one battles.
“In addition, I like to be comfortable in possession, helping lead the attack and defending from the front and giving everything I’ve got.”
