Grantham Get Good Away Point with 1-1 draw at Stourbridge
Grantham returned from a difficult Monday night trip to Stourbridge with a well-earned point following a 1-1 draw.
This was always going to be a difficult trip and several of the team were delayed en route only arriving minutes before kick-off.
Grantham began brightly with Greg Smith testing Stourbridge keeper Lewis Solly in the opening minutes of the game. Stourbridge went close on 4 minutes with Jake turner making a superb double save first from Karl Hawley and then from his strike partner Justin Richards and it was Richards who gave Stourbridge the lead on 6 minutes when he outpaced the Grantham defence down the left hand side to shot across Turner into the far corner of the net. Grantham came more into the game with Danny Meadows getting forward on the right hand side and they went close to an equalise on 10 minutes when Solly completely miskicked a back pass but recovered just in time to prevent Lee Shaw netting the loose ball. Danny Meadows saw his shot from the edge of the box go wide on 12 minutes and Greg smith put a header just wide as Grantham pressed for an equaliser. Stourbridge winger Matt Dodd was causing problems on the right hand side with his pace but Grantham still pushed forward for an equaliser. Turner had to save at full stretch from Karl Hawley on 29 minutes turning the ball round for a corner and Stourbridge went close to a second goal on 31 minutes when following a corner they struck the cross bar with turner beaten with the ball coming down but not over the line. Stourbridge were now pushing forward and Tom Tonks tested turner from distance on 36 minutes. Grantham seemed to weather the storm and Ben sunders went close with a header from another good Meadows cross on 40 minutes. The half ended with the Stourbridge retaining their single goal advantage.
Grantham began the second period on the attack. Lee Shaw burst through on 47 minutes but was adjudged narrowly off side and Michael Emmott brought a save from Solly a couple of minutes later. Greg Smith headed back across goal on 56 minutes but no one could get the final touch on the ball. Stourbridge came close to a second goal on 63 minutes when Hawley found himself one on one with Jake turner but the Stourbridge striker chose to square the ball to fellow striker Justin Richards but the pass eluded him and the good chance was lost. Stourbridge’s Chris Lait brought a save from Turner on 64 minutes and two minutes later Grantham got the equaliser their play deserved. Danny Meadows but in another deep cross from the right hand side, Greg Smith headed the ball back across the goal and an unmarked Ben Saunders headed home from close range.
