Gingerbreads miss out on the points
A late penalty takes the points in close encounter
The Gingerbreads took to the road again with a first ever visit to Birchwood Colts.
Grantham were without 3 players due to illness including the regular goalkeeper.
The visitors started well and within a minute Lewis Smith had a chance on goal which went wide of the target.
Grantham continued to work hard and were putting the Birchwood defence under pressure.
Grantham were rewarded on 9 minutes when Lewis Smith found himself space in front of goal to tuck the ball past the keeper to put the Gingerbreads ahead.
The young Gingerbreads went looking for more goals and were still pressing hard against the hosts, then on 11 minutes Grantham were awarded a penalty and captain Oliie Burton stepped up to fire Grantham into a 2-0 lead.
Moments later Lewis Smith again found an opening only to see his shot at the near post well saved by the Birchwood keeper.
Birchwood came more into the game and against the wind produced some good moves and had a couple of chances just go wide, Harry Pulfrey in goal saved well when the hosts were put through one on one.
At the other end Jack Carroll had a chance but his shot was straight at the keeper and the rebound was cleared.
The hosts came forward and gained a penalty kick for a push inside the box which was converted to reduce the Gingerbread lead.
The game became very open with chances from both teams and the equaliser for the Colts came on 33 minutes when the ball was calmed slotted home.
The second half was a tight affair and Grantham did well playing against the wind and at the other end were defending well to keep out the hosts.
It always looked like the next goal would win the game for either team, both sides were working hard to try for the winner in a display of good football from both sets of players.
On 65 minutes the referee controversially awarded the Colts another penalty for a challenge that seemed fine. The penalty was scored and the hosts were ahead.
Grantham rallied for an equaliser and both Matthew Smith and Lewis Smith went close with their chances.
It wasn't Grantham's day as the referee blew for full time and a 3-2 for Birchwood Colts.
